Tweeting is a form of social networking which is quick and easy to use and instantly puts information out to millions of people. Because it is so easy to use and so easy for other people to view, the content which people place on this platform should be content which the sender is happy for anyone to see, or as the article says “#imagineyourmamareadingit ”. Employees and official organisations such as the Police are also able to access this content with the same ease of the public so there is no wonder that the subject of this article found himself in strife when they local police replied to his request for weed with “Awesome! Can we come too? MT @Sunith_DB8R Any dealers in Vaughan wanna make a 20sac chop? Come to Keele/Langstaff Mr. Lube, need a spliff.” This sparked a huge amount of re-tweets and tension for the man’s employer who subsequently fired the man. Businesses are well within their rights to take this action in my view, as twitter is a public forum anyone can see what has been said which in turn could either help or hinder a business. The York Regional Police tweeted a valid statement following this ordeal “If you shouted on a busy street corner about illegal activity & we drove by, we’d intervene. Think of Twitter as a virtual street corner.” I think the issue of this drama is not the fact that police are intercepting messages but the fact that some people are stupid enough to put requests like this out to the public, the chances of the man being caught meeting his local dealer was probably far less than the chance of being spotted on twitter. Does this make you think twice about what you are posting? Or does this just make you laugh at the stupidity of some people?
